Common Characteristics of an Effective Leader

A leader is expected to be able to bring the organization to achieve its goals. However, not all leaders can achieve organizational goals. There are times when leaders lead to setbacks for the organizations they lead. A leader needs the characteristics of an effective leader in order to carry out their duties properly.

Structural leaders and effective relational leaders have a number of characteristics. The following are a number of characteristics of an effective leaders that need to be possessed:

1 # Having a vision for the future.
Effective leadership starts with a clear vision. A clear vision can forcefully encourage changes in the organization. A leader is a change inspirational and visionary, which has a clear vision of where his organization will go. Without vision, leadership will have no meaning at all.

In addition to having a vision, a leader must also have the ability to implement that vision into a series of actions or activities needed to achieve that vision.

2 # Technically Capable.
A leader does not have to master the duties of his followers in detail. However, good leaders must have technical skills related to achieving goals. Technical skills make leaders able to direct subordinates appropriately and well.

For example, to build a high-rise building, of course a project leader who has the skills and technical experience in the field is needed. It is impossible for the project to be led by Political Bachelor graduates who have never been involved in building construction projects at all.

3 # Making the Right Decision.
A leader must be able to solve the problem by making the right decision. The right decision will prevent the group from falling into the most severe risk. To decide something, accurate information is needed and clear planning regarding the activities of the organization.

The leader must make sure every task description is understood, carried out, and monitored. Every important development needs to be communicated with organizational elements so that a sense of belonging arises. In addition to those related to work, leaders must also be able to use their communication skills to build interpersonal relationships with subordinates and management.

5 # Give example.
Words will have no power if the person who says them does the opposite. A good leader not only gives direction, but also gives a good example. A leader also needs to be humble, realistic, and friendly. Leaders who are considered annoying will certainly find it difficult to get awards from their members.

6 # Able to Trust People.
No matter how great a leader is, he will still not be able to do a large and complex task alone. A good leader, must be able to assess people's abilities and delegate tasks based on the results of the assessment. He will not be able to delegate tasks if he does not trust others. Therefore, leaders must be able to trust others without losing awareness.

7 # Able to Hold Emotions.
A good leader needs to have the ability to resist emotions. Not only just avoiding anger that is unreasonable, but also must be able to hide panic and worry in dealing with problems. Psychologically, if the leader looks panic, his men also tend to panic.

8 # Resist Facing Pressure.
Another characteristics of an effective leader is he must stand the pressure. Many people think that being a leader is fun because they just tell them to. In fact, the greatest pressure to succeed is on the shoulders of the leader. If the leader cannot stand the pressure, he will make fatal mistakes that lead to failure.

9 # Responsible.
When a decision has been made, all parties in the organization must support it. If it turns out that the decisions taken have a bad impact, then the leader must be responsible and not just throwing problems at others. Responsibility does not only mean acknowledging mistakes, but also providing solutions to those problems.

10 # Identifying Members.
A leader needs to recognize more than just the names of its members. Leaders also need to know the abilities and characters of their members appropriately. This makes leaders able to make the right decisions so that each person is placed in the right position and in synergy.

11 # Dexterous and Full of Innovation.
In the face of opportunities and threats, an effective leader needs to have an agile nature and dare to innovate. That is, leaders must be alert to changing situations and take advantage of existing opportunities with available resources.
