Definitional of Situational Leadership and How It Is Done

Situational leadership theory is an approach which states that the leader understands his behavior, the nature of his subordinates, and the situation before using a certain leadership style. This approach requires leaders to have the skills to analyze human behavior.

Definitional of situational leadership is "a leadership contingency theory that focuses on follower readiness / maturity". The essence of situational leadership theory is that the leadership style of a leader will vary depending on the level of readiness of his followers.

The fundamental understanding of situational leadership theory is about the absence of the best leadership style. Effective leadership is dependent on the relevance of the task. Almost all successful leaders always adapt the appropriate leadership style.

Leadership effectiveness is not just a matter of influence on individuals and groups. The effectiveness of leadership depends on the task, job or function required as a whole. Thus, the situational leadership approach focuses on the phenomenon of leadership in a unique situation. From this perspective, a leader must be able to adapt his style to the demands of changing circumstances.

This definitional of situational leadership refers to the situational leadership theory developed by Paul Hersey, author of Situational Leader, and Ken Blanchard, expert and author of The Minute Manager.

This theory was originally introduced as "Life Cycle Theory of Leadership". Then, in the mid-1970s the "Life Cycle Theory of Leadership" was replaced by the "Situational Leadership Theory". 

In the late 1970s and early 1980s, each writer developed his own leadership theory. Hersey - developing the Situational Leadership Model. While Blancard developed Situational Leadership Model II.

What Is a Situational Leadership Style Like?

Situational leadership style is a leadership style that is based on the situation. To be able to develop a leadership style, leaders must be able to understand the situation. The use of situations to determine what will be done, will be very important so that an organization runs well.

Changes in the situation will cause changes in the needs of subordinates. These differences make the leader must choose a different leadership style in the situation of different subordinates.

This is done so that each subordinate is understood by the leader what is needed in doing the tasks of the leader. Leaders' knowledge of what is needed by subordinates should be immediately fulfilled by leaders so that subordinates can work more optimally.

Leaders' knowledge of the condition of their subordinates is followed up by selecting the most appropriate leadership style for subordinates. The choice of leadership style that suits the conditions of subordinates makes the performance of subordinates work as effectively and efficiently as possible.

This of course will greatly affect the performance of the organization. For this reason, the way to conduct situational leadership is to always pay attention to subordinates. Subordinates will always be the main indicator in the success of a leader.
